The Washington State Ferries originated in the early 1900s. The early ferrries were steamer ships known as the Mosquito Fleet. In 1929, the industry consolidated into 2 different companies. After World war II, labor costs made ferry systems very challenging to operate. By the late 1940s, this brought ferry services to a halt. The state of Washington recognized that ferries were the life line of many communities that heavily relieded on ferry services.
